The concept of transfers are quite common in North America.
Most cities are built on a grid and often only 1 route runs along a street, so once you pay, the transfer is proof of payment that you can show when you get on a connecting bus and the one after that if necessary. They are valid for about 90 minutes so you cannot use them like a day ticket. Day tickets are sold in the subway stations and cost about the same as 4 individual tickets. In Hamilton & London they valid for 90 minutes and can be used as a return for the price of a single fare if you are quick.
Coins can be used to ride as well. I am 67 and the TTC costs $2 a ride for a senior, so I use a $2 coin because I only visit there 8 times a year and it is not worth buying a lot of tokens at a time.
The bus 8069 was photographed at the airport on 192 “rocket” route which means it only stops at a few major stops, similar to the 7E service in Budapest.
